The Milwaukee Business Journal asked members of the local real estate community to share their thoughts on what could be done with Northridge Mall going forward to finally reverse its two decades of decline.
George Gaspar from Cornerstone Realtors shares his take…
"We should not throw the baby out with the bathwater. There is a way to preserve the physical mall structure and evolve the space into a refreshed vision which includes retail, housing, medical and educational facilities that will benefit the surrounding neighborhood. When someone commits investment to that area, the entire surrounding neighborhood will benefit by creating jobs and services that strengthen the community.
"The municipality needs to be a partner in this process. There has to be a willingness from the city of Milwaukee to work with potential purchasers and be open to a new vision for the site."

The house received an accepted offer on the first day on the market.
“This craftsmanship is so representative of the Milwaukee area and the wonderful men and women who came from all over the world to live here, and it’s really the details of the house and that fact that as long as Carolyn and Leon have owned it it has been tremendously filled with love,” says Waite, noting that even after more than 30 years of marriage, the Travantis couldn’t sit next to one another without holding hands or touching. “The people who they brought here – friends and relatives – came from all over the world and that energy is still in this home.”
“It can move forward in a lot of different ways,” says listing agent Mary Beth Waite, of Cornerstone Realtors. “It can be an Air BnB, it can be a single family, but he’s very passionate about making sure the history of this house is preserved.”

Common spaces such as a clubhouse, heated pool or fitness area allow condo residents to cultivate a sense of community, according to Gaspar-Waite. The “Glen” developments by Cornerstone Developments (not associated with Cornerstone Realtors) in Pewaukee and Brookfield are an example. “Each development has it’s own personality. It is not just about dollars, cents and cabinet design,” she says. “Green space for walking dogs and/or patio space for grilling is key.
